NAIFA Northern California, originally chartered as NAIFA Sacramento in 1939, is part of one of the oldest and largest trade organizations in the insurance and financial services field. NAIFA was founded in 1890 as the National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU). In California, 9 out of 11 local associations came together and formed the California Association of Life Underwriters (CALU) in 1934. Other historical highlights include:

1951 – NALU created the General Agents and Managers Association (GAMA)
1957 – NALU formed the Association of Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU)
1990 – NALU created the Association of Health Insurance Agents (AHIA)
1998 – NALU voted to change its name to the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) - California followed suit becoming CAIFA
2007 – NAIFA begins implementing NAIFA21, the strategic plan for the 21st century
2007 – NAIFA Sacramento, NAIFA Northern California and NAIFA Shasta vote to merge into one local chapter and its combined membership votes to change the local chapter’s name to "NAIFA Northern California"

NAIFA Northern California shares in the NAIFA mission by serving its members and their clients by supporting the legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts at the state and federal levels, offering opportunities for ongoing professional development, networking and mentoring, and promoting the ethical conduct of its members. Through supporting and protecting a strong insurance and financial services industry that provides needed services and products for consumers, NAIFA members offer outstanding service their clients and community.
